Photography to promote Game of Thrones Season Seven

Stuart Forster, a professional photographer based near Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England, shows images taken by Hadrian’s Wall as part of photography to promote Game of Thrones season seven.

Winter is here. That’s precisely how it felt during a photography shoot to promote the new Game of Thrones television series. Despite it being July and supposedly the height of summer it was a chilly, wet day.

The much-anticipated Season Seven of Game of Thrones began on Sky Atlantic at 9.00 pm on Monday 17 July 2017.

The Night King on Hadrian’s Wall

I was working on Hadrian’s Wall to photograph a model dressed as the Night King from the popular television show. More than five million viewers tuned in to each episode of Game of Thrones’ Season Six on Sky’s platforms.

Why Hadrian’s Wall, you might wonder? The answer is simple. The Roman era, UNESCO World Heritage Site inspired George RR Martin’s vision for The Wall. If you’re a Game of Thrones fan then you’ll know that is the 700-foot ice wall that stretches for 300 miles along the northern frontier of the Seven Kingdoms and is defended by the Nights Watch.

A king and his horse

The heavens opened just minutes before the shoot was due to begin, causing severe delays and leaving the fields around Hadrian’s Wall slippery.

Fortunately, the model who spent almost four hours in makeup so that he looked like the Night King was a skilled horse rider and had no problems on the wet terrain after the rain eventually stopped.

The horse was not the only animal we had to consider during the shoot. Cows were roaming in the field that we were working in. Cats are renowned for their curiosity but, we found, cows also have that trait.

They sidled up for a closer look at the proceedings. Had we stumbled across some bovine fan club?

Game of Thrones on Sky

Some of my favourite shots from the shoot are those of the Night King rearing the horse and staring into my lens.

Thank you, Fiona. It’s a great honour to undertake the photography that was used to promote such a major television series.
